The Canopies Is Near Houston's Next Landmark: Rodeo Announces New Agriculture Complex

The Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo is one of Houston's most treasured traditions. From live music, carnival rides, to the World Famous BBQ cookoff and delicious food from some of the best vendors in Houston and beyond, Houston residents cherish and look forward to this month-long event every year. The HLSR Organization has just announced they are looking to expand their operations along 288, with a new agricultural and livestock complex that is expected to add more than 1 million square feet of event space.

Though plans have begun, construction will take time as the goal timeline will be for the 2029 Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo. This space is designed to support livestock shows, horse show competitions, junior and open breeding shows, archery competitions, agricultural mechanics, commercial auctions and educational contests. The new complex will not replace its 69-year residency at Reliant Park but merely become an extension to help the flow of operations.

President and CEO, Chris Boleman, states that preparation for the project will not veer from the current support the HLSR currently has with students and families “This represents the largest investment in rodeo history and a profound commitment to the future of our event, educational opportunities and agriculture,” Boleman says.

Other representatives such as Mayor John Whitmore and Harris County Commissioner Lesley Briones encourage the project and claim that as Harris County continues to grow, pathways for young Texans need to be available as the Rodeo community has been responsible for countless scholarships, youth competitions and leadership development.

This new agricultural complex represents an incredible opportunity for the future of our youth.
